About Metallurgical-Grade Alumina
Metallurgical-grade (smelter-grade) alumina is the white, powdery aluminum oxide produced by refining bauxite. Aluminum smelters dissolve it in molten cryolite and reduce it electrolytically — the Hall-Héroult process — to make primary aluminum.
Smelters specify purity, impurity levels and physical properties such as particle size and surface area, because they affect cell performance and fume capture. Each parcel is confirmed against the smelter’s requirement.
Typical applications
- Primary aluminum smelting (Hall-Héroult)
- Dry scrubbing in smelter fume treatment
- Selected chemical and ceramic applications
