About Direct Reduced Iron
DRI — also called sponge iron — is produced by removing oxygen from iron ore pellets or lump with a reducing gas, below melting temperature. The result is a highly metallic, porous product that is an excellent feed for electric-arc steelmaking.
That porosity makes DRI reactive: in contact with water or moist air it can re-oxidize, generate heat and release hydrogen. Storage and ocean transport therefore follow the IMSBC Code, often under an inert atmosphere, and many international shipments move as HBI instead. We confirm the form and handling plan before any offer.
Typical applications
- Electric-arc furnace charge, often fed continuously
- Captive use next to DR plants
- Dilution of residual elements in scrap-based steelmaking
