About Hot Briquetted Iron
HBI is direct-reduced iron compacted while hot into dense briquettes. Compaction sharply reduces the material’s tendency to re-oxidize, which is why HBI is the form in which direct-reduced iron most commonly moves by sea.
Steelmakers use HBI as a clean, low-residual source of metallic iron — in electric-arc furnaces to dilute copper and other tramp elements from scrap, and in blast furnaces and converters to raise productivity. Ocean carriage follows the IMSBC Code.
Typical applications
- Electric-arc furnace charge alongside scrap
- Blast-furnace and BOF charge to raise productivity
- Foundries and specialty steel requiring low residuals
