About Bauxite

Bauxite is the principal ore of aluminum. Refineries digest it in caustic soda — the Bayer process — to extract alumina, which smelters then reduce to aluminum metal.

A refinery’s economics depend on how much alumina it can recover and how much caustic it consumes, so available alumina and reactive silica are the key numbers. Venezuela’s Guayana region has supplied bauxite for domestic alumina production.

Typical applications

  • Alumina refining (Bayer process)
  • Refractory, abrasive and cement grades, where specified
  • Blending programmes for refineries
